Beating Common Sense into Interactive Applications
نویسندگان
چکیده
been to put commonsense knowledge into computers—enabling machines to reason about everyday life. Some projects, such as Cyc, have begun to amass large collections of such knowledge. However, it is widely assumed that the use of common sense in interactive applications will remain impractical for years, until these collections can be considered sufficiently complete and commonsense reasoning sufficiently robust. Recently, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Laboratory, we have had some success in applying commonsense knowledge in a number of intelligent interface agents, despite the admittedly spotty coverage and unreliable inference of today’s commonsense knowledge systems. This article surveys several of these applications and reflects on interface design principles that enable successful use of commonsense knowledge.

Interactive Art Analysis Based on Baudrillard’s Hyper reality Theory, a Case Study of Digital Interactive installation
The contemporary philosopher Jean Baudrillard, one of the postmodernism theorists, considers representation in the contemporary world as a factor in the disappearance of reality. In his view, the main feature of new arts is not the expression of artistic beauty, but communication with the audience and expression of the artist’s ideas. In interactive art, the presence and role of the audience in...
متن کاملA Kinematic Approach for Efficient and Robust Simulation of the Cardiac Beating Motion
Computer simulation techniques for cardiac beating motions potentially have many applications and a broad audience. However, most existing methods require enormous computational costs and often show unstable behavior for extreme parameter sets, which interrupts smooth simulation study and make it difficult to apply them to interactive applications. To address this issue, we present an efficient...
متن کاملImproving Human-Computer Interaction by Developing Culture-sensitive Applications based on Common Sense Knowledge
Computing is becoming ever more present in people’s everyday life. Regarding this fact, researchers started to think of ways for improving Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) so that computer applications and devices provide users with a more natural interaction, considering the context which users are inserted into, as humans can do (Harper et al., 2008). Developing culture-sensitive interactive ...
متن کاملHuman induced pluripotent stem cell-derived beating cardiac tissues on paper.
There is a growing interest in using paper as a biomaterial scaffold for cell-based applications. In this study, we made the first attempt to fabricate a paper-based array for the culture, proliferation, and direct differentiation of human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) into functional beating cardiac tissues and create "a beating heart on paper." This array was simply constructed by b...
متن کاملThe Use of Word Sense Disambiguation in an Information Extraction System
This paper describes a rule-based methodology for word sense disambiguation and an application of the methodology to information extraction using rules generalized with the help of the WordNet system. The methodology creates word sense dis-ambiguation rules based on user trained examples working in the domain of interest. It achieves accuracy rates comparable to the best competing methods and c...
